If I had to pick...

I am often asked, "If you could choose only one car....?" Well, since this is my fantasy, it takes place in a land where everyone get pollution-free gas gratis from Google. There are no speed limits and track days are a Constitutional right. But I digress...

In the automotive lexicon, the term 'GT' derives from the Italian phrase gran turismo, describing automobiles regarded as grand tourers. able to make long-distance, high-speed journeys in both comfort and style. I want this one...

The Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano has a front mounted 5.999 liter V-12 thats makes 612 horsepower delivered to the rear wheels. It's comfortable-for-touring interior is an affront to vegans everywhere, all hand-stitched leather and such. It features a 'Magna-Ride' suspension that delivers a smooth ride and outstanding cornering in one package. The shock absorbers are filled with magnetic fluid that responds instantly to cornering pressures to firm up a given wheel in real time. (Note: These shocks are sourced from GM and were developed for the $100+k Corvette ZR-1, which has a smoother ride AND better handling than the $70k Z-06.)

When it comes down to it, the 599 isn't about cache. It's about gravitas. If you want to play, or be seen, or pick up girls, you choose a mid-engine Spyder. If you just want to show how stinking rich you are, you spring for a Bugatti. But if you are of a mind to drive all night until the sun slowly fills your rear view mirror and the Rocky Mountains fill your windshield, have I got the ride for you.
